The database now contains over 2000 first name translations and almost 11,500 surnames. Obviously not all names are catered for, but if you require a translation contact me with the website email address and I'll try and find the Irish translation for your name if one exists. There are a number of names that can not be translated into Irish, while some names have a number of Irish forms. Apologies for any inaccuracies, as I used a number of websites to gather the names and their translations. NB: All surname results are in male form. If the translation is for a female the following rules apply. 'Ní' is the prefix of an unmarried woman with surnames that would begin with Ó, i.e. Ní Cléirigh; 'Uí' is the prefix for a married female's surname i.e. Uí Súileabháin. 'Níc' is the prefix of a female with surnames that would begin with Mac, i.e. 'Níc Carthaigh; Database last updated 25th March 2009 |
